The quest for freedom is a very personal journey that can take many forms. In the Freedom Seekers series we will be exploring what that journey looks like for those who hold freedom as a near and dear goal. We are here to tell the story of those who cherish it like the treasure that it is. We share the love of freedom with the subjects of this show and honor their explorations of what freedom means to them. We en-devour to celebrate the freedom we see around us and to be grateful for the freedoms that we find.
“I find there is freedom in each moment,
a freedom to choose my response, my mood, my perspective,
my thoughts, my disposition, my words, my attitude, and my actions.
My emotions will follow based upon my choice;
and thus, I have the ability to choose my feelings.” Garnet McPherson
There is a poem written in 1916 that sums up my sentiments well.
I have often found myself quoting it to those charting a course in life.
I have often found myself quoting it to those charting a course in life.
"One Ship Sails East
But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and way, and away,
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.
But to every man there openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.
One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
‘Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
‘Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife."
– Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Freedom means different things to different people and it is one thing in life that tends to be self defined. But often it comes down to some form to a freedom to choose. It remains a quest for so many yet it can be found in something as simple as an attitude of gratitude.
“I don’t need to escape my circumstances to find freedom. In many ways freedom is a form of thought. Every day holds freedom when you see it from that perspective. I have a choice, to find the beauty, peace, and joy in this and every moment I am present for!” - Garnet McPherson
“The nature of my thoughts is what helps me to patch up my weathered sail and cheerfully greet the gusts each day will present. When I lay my head down in the dark, I want to smile on how I faced adventures in the light. If I managed to learn something, to share something, if I was able to make even a small difference, my day has been a success. So however blustery the winds may blow, I know my journey will bring me opportunities to grow.”
“Each day is a gift, an opportunity to be fully present to the present. Each dawn brings with it another chance to become more tomorrow than I was yesterday. What more can I ask for than this.”
Garnet McPherson

“Birds in flight…
Children playing…
Sailing on the sea…
Aaaaah, freedom…
A quiet moment to be still and take it all in:
the sun’s warmth,
the cool breeze,
the sand between my toes…
Oh, to bottle this moment, take it home, and pour it out over a stressful day!
When winter is too long, the days too short, my patience even shorter;
to stop, be still and remember the feeling of freedom!”
